Downtown Batesville, Indiana is full of interesting blooms this summer. You will be in awe of an art exhibit filled with 464 colorful, “blooming” umbrellas that seem to float together in the sky. It’s an Instagram dream.
Called the Umbrella Sky Project, this international art exhibit has been making its rounds from Lisbon, Paris, Pittsburgh, Miami, Pensacola, Dollywood and now Batesville. The umbrellas are on display at this fifth U.S. location through the middle of October 2021.

Created to add color to cityscapes, these umbrellas also bring a smile with a touch of their whimsy. The project started in 2011 in Agueda, Portugal along a promenade to add shade over pedestrians during an annual summer art festival. The incredibly beautiful effect soon went viral, and photos were shared worldwide. Other cities soon wanted to showcase similar umbrellas. The Batesville Area Arts Council took on the project after a board member experienced them in Mexico.

Head soon to Batesville to look up and admire these floating umbrellas. Your inner Mary Poppins will be fascinated. While you are there, be sure to check out the town’s local shops and restaurants. It’s a great place to visit and even more special now that it is a host to a world-renowned exhibit.
The Umbrella Project is located at 121 Shopping Village, Batesville, Indiana 47006.
