New year, new hobby…why not learn to knit?
I love winter more than the average person, but even a winter-lover like me can’t spend ALL the time outside. I’ve always loved a cozy knitted sweater, hat, mittens, scarf, you name it–if it’s soft and warm, I’ll wear it! So I thought it would be fun to learn how to make these things myself. Bonus: they help you endure the winter weather for even longer!
Why Not Learn to Knit?
Two years ago I wandered into Main Street Yarns in downtown Mason, OH and asked if they could help me learn to knit. They quickly got me started with beginner knitting classes. After just two or three classes, the in-person classes were discontinued because of COVID, but thanks to the wonderful people there who shifted all the classes to Zoom, my new-found dreams of becoming a knitter were not shattered! They kept the dream going and also offered help via phone/text, even delivering yarn and tools to my house when we were in lockdown.
Yarn, Glorious Yarn
One thing that every knitter loves is selecting beautiful yarns for their projects. Main Street Yarns has so many! With their large selection of colors and textures, you can explore your creativity for hours. The store is buzzing with a vibrant community of fiber artists and is open anytime to knitters who want to hang out and knit in a supportive atmosphere. They offer fun promotions throughout the year: clubs, KALs (Knit Alongs), and give-aways! If you prefer to do your shopping online, you can visit the store website and browse through their selection of books, gifts, patterns, yarns, and more.

The Importance of Support
When starting a new hobby like learning to knit, you don’t know what you don’t know, right? Main Street Yarns offers a variety of classes, events, and group knitting to get you started with your knitting journey. They really take the time to answer questions and help you pick out all the right tools for you to be successful. They will also help you fix all the mistakes (there will definitely be mistakes!). You will be knitting sweaters before you know it!

I feel grateful for the friends I have made in my knitting group and the friendly, supportive, encouraging environment at Main Street Yarns. It’s made knitting fun and inspiring–not just a way to make warm winter clothes, but a way to make new friends. If you decide to make knitting your new hobby, they will welcome you and make you part of their family!
