Nature Indoors: The Beauty of Biophilic Design and Moss Wall Art with Abby Shaner

Biophilic design has gained significant attention in recent years due to its ability to seamlessly merge the beauty of nature with the functionality of modern architecture. Incorporating natural elements into our built environment can improve well-being, productivity, and overall quality of life. To really understand what biophilic design is all about, I had the opportunity to chat with Abby Shaner, a talented local artist and the owner of WoodSolStone Studio. Abby is known for her stunning moss wall creations that are inspired by the beauty of nature.

When I sat down with Abby she helped break down the concept of biophilic design. Abby beautifully articulates that at its core, biophilic design seeks to establish a harmonious connection between humans and nature. What’s great about preserved moss and biophilic design is that they require minimal attention and maintenance. They don’t need light or water, so you can simply hang them and enjoy their beauty for years to come. They are perfect for those who love plants and nature but struggle with keeping them alive.  Abby loves the moment during a consultation when a client exclaims – “Wait, I can’t kill this?” Nope. You sure can’t, Zero Maintenance!

Moss wall art offers a charming and unique way of incorporating the beauty of nature into your home. Hearing Abby describe what she loves about moss art is enchanting – every aspect of the frame, from the shape of the mushrooms to the colors of the stones and the lines in the driftwood, every detail is worth exploring. You can get lost in the various types of moss and the lush shades of green, wildflowers, and preserved ferns.

Abby began her journey with moss art unexpectedly when she was pregnant with her daughter. She stumbled upon it while looking for a creative and eco-friendly way to decorate her nursery.  Abby’s love for nature is deep in her veins, her father is the second-generation owner of local treasure (and my favorite spring and fall spot to shop) Sharon Nursery in Mason. Combining this love of nature with her innate artistic ability Abby quickly developed her unique style, combining vibrant plant life with intricate designs.

After posting the nursery wall on social media her moss art soon caught the attention of friends and family, who asked if Abby could create a custom piece for them.  In need of a framer for her designs, Abby turned to her husband who was a woodworking hobbyist at the time. With their shared passion for artistic expression and attention to detail, they meticulously curated each piece, infusing it with individuality and timeless beauty. Their flawless collaboration turned basic materials into masterpieces, revitalizing cozy living spaces for clients and adding a pop of color to the walls of local establishments.

Moss walls offer a brilliant opportunity to infuse creative and well thought out designs into your living space. Research indicates that these walls enhance productivity in both homes and workspaces by reconnecting us with nature, thereby improving our mental and physical well-being. Moreover, they can serve as effective sound barriers, contributing to a peaceful atmosphere that promotes cognitive function.

Abby has embraced working with clients on their terms. Some individuals prefer exchanging messages or emails to discuss various design aspects. Creating a piece with Abby would involve conversations about dimensions, colors, and elements such as mushrooms, wildflowers, amaranthus, driftwood, preserved ferns, and other plants as well as frame design specifications and budget.  Abby loves to visit the space she will be creating a piece for and provide a few renderings of the concept prior to embarking on the 6-8 week task of completing the unique one-of-a-kind piece.  Abby has found these walls not only serve as a talking point in a room but can also incorporate special keepsakes.  One client returned from a hiking trip with her husband, and she wanted to incorporate the rocks she collected into her moss wall. Another client, wanting to create a special Christmas gift, brought in a beautiful piece of driftwood from her mom’s collection to include in her moss wall.

Abby’s journey with moss art continues to evolve. She constantly explores new techniques and materials, pushing the boundaries of her artistry. Her work serves as a reminder of the beauty and importance of nature, urging others to reconnect with the natural world and appreciate its wonders.
