There’s a lot to explore here too—historic buildings, museums, and even the Wright Brothers’ original airplane. It’s a great spot if you want to learn something new while still enjoying the outdoors.
Even though there are picnic tables, the lawns are perfect for a relaxed afternoon, with lots of shade and peaceful views. Grab a blanket, find a comfy spot under a tree, and take it all in.
Picnic Tip: Don’t forget to stop by the park’s newest addition, the Carrillon Park Railroad, a nearly mile-long train ride in a replica 1851 locomotive!
Cox Arboretum MetroPark
For anyone who loves nature, Cox Arboretum is an absolute gem. This 174-acre botanical park is full of stunning gardens, serene ponds, and miles of walking trails. There is something for everyone here.
You can either use the designated picnic area, surrounded by lush foliage, or venture further into the park to find the perfect spot. Cox Arboretum has so many different gardens to experience that it’s hard to choose just one. So, pick a new spot to layout your picnic every time you go until you find your favorite!
Picnic Tip: After you eat, take a stroll through the Edible Landscape Garden and walk to the top of the Tree Tower to round out the perfect picnic.
Wegerzyn Gardens MetroPark

The atmosphere is peaceful, yet there’s plenty to do—take a stroll after lunch, visit the archery range, and kids can explore the nearby playground. Oak Grove offers a beautiful and welcoming backdrop for any picnic and offers a range of fun activities to do while you’re there.
Picnic Tip: Bring your fishing poles for this picnic! Oak Grove allows catch and release fishing in the pond. Set up on the dock and eat your lunch while you wait for the fish to bite.
John Bryan State Park
If you’re willing to explore a little beyond Dayton, John Bryan State Park is definitely worth the trip. Located in Yellow Springs, this 752-acre park offers stunning views with its limestone cliffs, clear streams, and dense forests.
The park has several great picnic spots, some with amazing views of the gorge. After your meal, you can explore the nearby Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve for some incredible hiking or just take in the natural beauty of the area.
