Burger Season in Cincy: Where to Find the City’s Best Bites

There’s never really a bad time for a burger. Whether it’s a classic cheeseburger from a neighborhood institution or a crispy-edged smashburger loaded with creative toppings, Cincinnati knows how to do this American favorite right.

Greater Cincinnati’s burger scene is packed with personality, from no-frills taverns that have welcomed generations of regulars to newer spots putting their own spin on the classic. Some keep things simple with beef, cheese, and a perfectly toasted bun, while others pile on unexpected toppings and Cincinnati-inspired creations.

Hungry yet? Here are eight local spots to add to your Cincinnati burger bucket list.

Zip’s Cafe | Mt. Lookout

Some Cincinnati traditions never go out of style. A Mt. Lookout landmark since 1926, Zip’s Cafe has been serving its famous flame-broiled burgers for generations.

Step inside the tiny, single-room restaurant and you’ll find warm wooden booths, friendly counter service, and the beloved toy train making its way around a track near the ceiling. The no-frills atmosphere is part of the charm, and so is the menu.

The classic Zip’s Burger is always a good place to start, but adventurous appetites can take things up a notch with the Girth Burger, topped with a split grilled Mettwurst, or the Flying Pig, piled with shaved ham and bacon.

Burger Highlight: Keep it classic with the Zip’s Burger, fries or onion rings, and a side of the restaurant’s famous chili.

Milkman | Over-the-Rhine

Retro diner nostalgia meets the modern smashburger at Milkman in Over-the-Rhine.

Inspired by the diners of the 1950s, Milkman brings plenty of personality to the neighborhood with crispy-edged smash burgers, fries, boozy milkshakes, and a setting that feels somewhere between an old-school diner and your favorite neighborhood bar.

The Milkman OG offers a classic introduction, while the Cowboy, Spicy, and distinctly Cincinnati Cincinnati Chili Burger give you plenty of reasons to come back and try something different.

Burger Highlight: Award-winning smash burgers, crispy fries, and a boozy milkshake make for the full Milkman experience.

The Turf Club | East End

It’s hard to miss The Turf Club. The colorful neon lights and eclectic vintage Americana are your first clue that this isn’t going to be an ordinary burger stop.

The East End institution is known for oversized burgers, premium ingredients, and creative toppings. It even earned national attention when Guy Fieri visited for Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives in 2010.

Today, you can order the Fieri Burger, inspired by the burger he enjoyed during his visit and topped with grilled onions, Swiss cheese, and burgundy wine sauce. Other favorites include the Surf and Turf and Mushroom Goat Burger.

Burger Highlight: Come hungry. These aren’t your average burgers, and the over-the-top toppings are all part of the fun.

Tickle Pickle | Northside

At Tickle Pickle, burgers come with a side of rock ‘n’ roll.

This eclectic Northside favorite has built its identity around music, playful menu names, and burgers made with 100% organic, grass-fed beef. Specialty pickles sourced from local favorite The Pickled Pig add another Cincinnati connection.

The music-inspired menu includes creations like Bread Zeppelin, Meatallica, Buns ‘N Roses, and Nom Petty. An extensive selection of vegan and vegetarian options also makes this one of the easiest burger stops for groups with different dietary preferences.

Burger Highlight: Pick your favorite music pun, grab a specialty burger, and embrace the casual Northside energy.

Heyday | East Walnut Hills

If crispy edges are the best part of a smashburger in your book, Heyday deserves a spot on your list.

This casual East Walnut Hills neighborhood joint keeps its burgers simple and lets the technique do the talking. The open flat-top grill serves as the focal point, giving diners a front-row seat as patties are smashed and cooked until those signature crispy edges form.

The House Burger is the classic choice, while the Better Boy offers Heyday’s take on Cincinnati’s beloved Big Boy-style burger. Pair yours with tallow fries or tots and one of the restaurant’s craft sodas.

And don’t leave without checking the dessert case. Heyday serves slices of O Pie O, including its signature honey vinegar pie and rotating seasonal options.

Burger Highlight: A double smashburger, tallow fries, craft soda, and slice of pie make for a seriously nostalgic summer meal.

Quatman Cafe | Mason & Norwood

Sometimes you don’t need elaborate toppings or a towering burger. You just need a really good cheeseburger.

That’s the philosophy at Quatman Cafe, a longtime neighborhood tavern in Norwood and a newer location in Mason, where simple comfort food, affordable prices, and a welcoming atmosphere have created a loyal following across generations.

Burgers arrive without much fuss, served on paper plates and reminiscent of something fresh off the griddle at a backyard cookout. Choose the standard 1/3-pound cheeseburger or arrive hungry for the signature 1/2-pound burger.

Burger Highlight: Simple, affordable, and satisfying. It’s the kind of classic neighborhood burger that never needed reinventing.

Nation Kitchen & Bar | Milford & Westwood

With locations on both sides of Greater Cincinnati, Nation Kitchen & Bar combines creative burgers with a little local history.

Both restaurants in Milford and Westwood occupy repurposed historic buildings filled with exposed brick, warm woods, and photographs that nod to their respective communities. Spacious patio areas also make Nation an easy choice for families and groups during warmer months.

The burgers feature thin, seasoned double patties served on toasted brioche or challah buns. Popular creations include The Nation, The Temperance, The Smatchet, and the appropriately named Piggy Smalls.

For something new, check out The BIT, Nation’s rotating Burger of the Month that gives back to the community. Each month brings a new burger created in support of a local nonprofit, with $1 from every BIT sold donated directly to the featured organization. It’s a delicious reason to try something different while supporting a local cause.

Burger Highlight: Creative double-patty burgers, historic surroundings, and spacious patios make this one worth visiting on either side of town.

The Gas Light Cafe | Pleasant Ridge

Ask longtime Cincinnatians where to find a great neighborhood burger and there’s a good chance The Gas Light Cafe will enter the conversation.

A Pleasant Ridge cornerstone since 1940, this family-owned neighborhood dive has earned a devoted following with thick, juicy burgers, approachable prices, and an atmosphere that feels refreshingly unchanged.

The patties get a signature char from the grill before being tucked into soft, corn-dusted Kaiser rolls. Go for the Gaslight Burger, keep things classic with a Bacon Cheeseburger, or switch it up with a Patty Melt.

Burger Highlight: A thick, char-grilled burger served in a true neighborhood institution. No trends required.
