Cincinnati Nature Books to Inspire Your Next Outdoor Adventure

As someone who spends as much time as possible outdoors—whether that’s hiking with my family, exploring our gorgeous rivers, or teaching scuba diving—one of my favorite ways to stay connected to nature is through reading. I’m excited to share some of my top picks for books that celebrate the natural beauty of Cincinnati and the wider Ohio region. These are perfect for your coffee table, backpack, or sharing with the next generation of nature lovers.

Cincinnati Nature Books

If you’ve ever spotted a flash of color in your backyard or while hiking Cincinnati’s many trails and wondered which bird it was, this book is a must-have.Stan Tekiela organizes 111 species by color, making it simple to identify that yellow warbler or cardinal you just saw. The book is packed with helpful facts, range maps, and detailed photographs—a real go-to for birders at any level. (While you’re at it, check out Stan’s other excellent field guides on Trees of Ohio, Wildflowers of Ohio, and Mushrooms of the Upper Midwest.)

Fascinating Lives and Landscapes: History Behind Cincinnati Nature Center by Jane Stotts

This book is a treasure for anyone who loves local history and our region’s green spaces. Jane Stotts spent 20 years researching the Cincinnati Nature Center, its founders, historic estates, and rare photos and accounts from descendants. If you’ve ever wondered why these places are so special or how they were preserved, this book will both deepen your appreciation and inspire your next visit.

For Kids: Art and Animals Activity Book by Charley Harper

Nature appreciation starts young, and this delightful sticker book by beloved Cincinnati artist Charley Harper is perfect for sparking curiosity. The book features 67 animals from his famous “Tree of Life” painting, all ready for kids to explore, sticker, and learn about. Charley’s art has always celebrated the interconnectedness of nature, and this hands-on activity book makes a wonderful introduction to our region’s wildlife for the youngest adventurers.

Storytime in Nature

If you’re looking for another way to combine learning and outdoor fun, consider visiting one of Ohio’s Storybook Trails. These trails give families the chance to walk through some of Ohio’s most natural areas while enjoying stories inspired by nature itself. Kids of all ages can find fun and interactive ways to engage with the stories, while also learning more about conservation and the natural world. It’s a fantastic opportunity to enjoy reading, movement, and the beauty of nature together.
