When people think about Cincinnati landmarks, Findlay Market is always near the top of the list. Located in the heart of Over-the-Rhine, Findlay Market has been bringing together local businesses, farmers, artisans, residents, and visitors for generations. While it is known for its fresh foods and unique vendors, Findlay Market is much more than a place to shop. It is a gathering place where Cincinnati’s culture, history, and sense of community come alive.
One of the things I enjoy most about Findlay Market is the incredible variety of fresh food available. Every visit gives me a chance to discover something new, but there are a few favorites I always look forward to. I usually pick up fresh catfish, often for less than four dollars a piece, along with Land O’ Lakes cheese and some of the large chicken wings available from the market vendors. The quality is outstanding, and the prices make it easy to support local businesses while bringing home great food for the family.
For anyone with a sweet tooth, Findlay Market is a dream. The market is filled with bakeries, candy shops, specialty desserts, and homemade treats. There are so many delicious options that you’ll want to try a little bit of everything. Whether you’re stopping in for a quick snack or taking home dessert for a family gathering, the market offers something for every taste.
Beyond the food, Findlay Market offers an atmosphere that keeps people coming back year after year. The outdoor seating areas are welcoming and full of energy. Families gather to enjoy meals together, friends meet up to explore the vendors, and dogs are always a common sight enjoying the day alongside their owners. I’ve even seen a family or two bring their cats along while relaxing outside in front of the market. The welcoming environment creates a sense of community that is hard to find elsewhere. Despite the popularity of the area, I usually get lucky and find a parking spot right on the street, making visits convenient and stress-free.
Inside Findlay Market
During a recent visit to Findlay Market, I took some time to talk with vendors, workers, and business owners about their experiences at the market. Those conversations gave me an even better appreciation for the variety of businesses and people that make Findlay Market such a special place.
One of the things I heard repeatedly was how much the market means to family-owned businesses.
Yee Mama is a Findlay Market gem, with handmade Cantonese wontons and small-batch sauces made with recipes inspired by the founder’s upbringing in Hong Kong. Cheng launched Yee Mama in 2020, and the business eventually grew from its work at Findlay Kitchen into its current Findlay Market location. Today, visitors can watch the team hand-fold wontons behind the counter and pick up both made-to-order food and items to take home.
Another family-owned business I learned about at Findlay Market, Kofinas Olive Oil & Vinegar, makes its own olive oil. The products come from local farms, and the family also participates in farmers markets throughout the Cincinnati area. Their olive oil has a particularly personal connection. The family found their own olive tree on an island and travels there to supervise the harvesting and pressing. Once the olive oil is brought back, they handle their own infusion and bottling. The business also has a Montgomery location and participates in several local farmers markets, including the Hyde Park Farmers Market on Sunday mornings, the Oxford Farmers Market on Saturday mornings and the Loveland Farmers Market on Tuesday mornings.

I also asked several vendors about the foods customers purchase most often. Fish and chicken wings came up frequently, along with turkey wings and turkey necks. Prepared foods are another popular option, with tuna salad and cucumber salad among the choices available. When it comes to favorite foods at the market, gyros, tacos and fish sandwiches were also mentioned. One vendor specifically named a fish sandwich and squeeze lemonade as favorites.
The variety makes it easy to understand why people can visit Findlay Market with a specific grocery list and still end up trying something completely different.
Plan Your Visit
If you’re looking for the busiest market experience, Saturday and Sunday are generally the most active days. Several vendors mentioned the weekend as their busiest time, with Saturday and Sunday bringing a steady flow of customers. The weekends also bring additional outdoor vendors and farmers, giving visitors even more to see and explore. If you’re simply looking to get your groceries and be in and out, the weekdays may be a better option.
For first-time visitors, I recommend arriving with an open mind and a healthy appetite. Take your time exploring the aisles, talk to the vendors, sample something new, and enjoy the outdoor spaces. You may come for the fresh food, but you’ll leave with an appreciation for the people and community that make Findlay Market such a special destination.
Of course, the best time to visit can also depend on what is happening at the market. There is always the possibility of finding something different when special events, outdoor vendors or seasonal activities are taking place.
Cincy Tradition
One of the things that makes Findlay Market special is how connected it is to Cincinnati’s traditions and events. Earlier this year, I participated in the Cincinnati Reds Opening Day Parade alongside several friends and colleagues from Sibcy Cline. The parade lineup began right next door to Findlay Market, and the excitement throughout the neighborhood was incredible. Seeing thousands of people gather to celebrate one of Cincinnati’s favorite traditions highlighted the important role Findlay Market plays in bringing the community together.

The market’s greatest strength is its people. The vendors, workers, and business owners create a welcoming atmosphere that makes every visit enjoyable. Whether you are chatting with someone behind the counter, learning about a family-owned business, or meeting fellow shoppers, there is always a friendly face and a story worth hearing.
