When my pup and I go on a run, one of his favorite things is a nice frozen treat to cool him down. I’ve seen many different recipes for homemade dog treats, but this one is so simple and easy. Leif loves them!
What You Need to Make Homemade Dog Treats
- A silicone mold or ice cube tray
- A fork or mixing utensil
- A small bowl (I use a 4 cup pyrex measuring bowl)
- Bananas
- Peanut Butter
- Bone Broth
Important note about Peanut butters: some contain xylitol, a sugar substitute that is toxic to dogs. When in doubt, check to see if this ingredient is in your peanut butter. Here is a short list of dog friendly peanut butters:
- 365 Organic Creamy Peanut Butter
- Teddie All Natural Super Chunky Peanut Butter
- Adams Natural Creamy/Crunchy Peanut Butter
- Trader Joe’s Salted or No Salt Creamy/Crunchy Peanut Butter
- Kirkland Signature Organic Creamy/Crunchy Peanut Butter
How to Make Homemade Dog Treats
- Start with a silicone treat mold. I purchased mine that has paw prints on it from Hobby Lobby, but you can buy them on amazon as well. If you don’t have one, that’s okay! You could use other things like an ice cube tray, or any other molds for chocolate or homemade treats. Now that you have the molds, you are ready to mix your ingredients.
- Start by adding your bananas to a large bowl. I usually make this recipe when my bananas are too ripe for me to enjoy, but any bananas will work. The softer the easier it will be to mix the ingredients. Take a fork or mixing utensil and squish the bananas down until you get that mushy texture, try to get out as many clumps as possible.
- Next, add your peanut butter. For every 1 or so bananas I usually add about half a cup of peanut butter and half a cup of bone broth. But this isn’t a picky recipe, I say add enough to get the right consistency and you’re all good. I promise your pup won’t complain! Mix all of that together.
- Next, you’re going to add in that Bone Broth. I use Pacific Brand Organic Bone Broth, and you can buy Bone Broth made for dogs as well. Just add enough to give a consistency like that of cake batter.
- Once your ingredients are mixed nicely, pour, or spoon your treat batter into your mold. (Of course, your pet will want to lick the spoon, we encourage that around here!)
- After this, I sometimes add a small pieces of training treats on top of the batter, but this isn’t necessary! The last step is to place your mold into the freezer.
- Once frozen, you can take a treat out of the mold and feed it to your pet.
