Summer Break Energy: Things to Do Around Southeast Indiana When School’s Out

When school’s out, Southeast Indiana shifts into full summer mode. Think dirt track races under the lights, hands-on adventures, scenic train rides, and plenty of ways to spend a full day outside.

Whether you’re planning a weekend outing or just looking to keep the kids busy, these local spots bring the kind of easy, memorable fun that summer is all about.

Feel the Rush at Lawrenceburg Speedway

Known locally as “The Burg,” this dirt track is a go-to for high-energy summer nights. Races run all season long, drawing crowds from Lawrenceburg and beyond for everything from sprint cars to special events like the fan-favorite Night of Destruction, complete with monster trucks, school bus races, and demo derbies.

It’s more than just watching from the stands, too. Kids can often meet drivers and take part in on-track autograph sessions, making it an experience that feels interactive and memorable.

Ride the Rails on Whitewater Valley Railroad

For a slower-paced day with a little nostalgia, hop aboard a scenic train ride from Connersville to Metamora. Depending on the experience you choose, trips can range from a half-day outing to a full 5 to 7 hour round trip.

The themed rides are where it really gets fun. The Wild West Special brings cowboys, outlaws, and lawmen onboard for a family-friendly experience you won’t find anywhere else. Along the way, you’ll take in views of farmland, wooded areas, and river scenery that you can only access by rail.

Explore Nature at Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge

Turn a summer day into a mini adventure by earning the Junior Refuge Manager Badge at Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge. Kids can complete activities like scavenger hunts, word searches, and creative projects while learning about local wildlife, plants, and the area’s history.

While you’re in Madison, make a stop at McWhiggon’s Wonder Emporium for a little extra fun. It’s packed with quirky, nostalgic toys that feel just as entertaining for adults as they are for kids.

Make a Splash at Brookville Lake

If your ideal summer day includes water, sunshine, and plenty of room to spread out, Brookville Lake checks every box. Families can spend the day swimming, fishing, boating, or paddleboarding, with two main beach areas at Mounds and Quakertown.

Want to turn it into a full weekend? Campgrounds at Mounds State Recreation Area, Quakertown, and Twin Forks make it easy to stay a little longer. And nearby, Wolf Creek Habitat & Rescue offers guided tours where you can see rescued wolves up close.

Strike Gold at Metamora Gem Mine

Bring a little hands-on excitement into your summer plans with a gem mining experience in Metamora. At the panning station, kids can sift through material to uncover real gemstones, minerals, and fossils to take home.

There’s also a gift shop and snack bar, and plans for a second location featuring a Dinosaur World exhibit, adding even more to explore.

Follow the Sweet Stops of Richmond Chocolate Trail

Just north in Richmond, the Chocolate Trail is the kind of outing that feels equal parts treat and adventure. With 16 stops along the route, you’ll find everything from historic candy shops and bakeries to ice cream parlors and cozy cafés.

You can even collect points along the way and watch chocolatiers at work at Abbott’s Candies, making it a fun, interactive way to spend the day.

Dig Into History at Archaeological Research Institute

For something a little different, the Archaeological Research Institute offers hands-on ways to explore history. With programs for both kids and adults, it’s a place where learning feels like discovery.

From camps and guided experiences to events like flower pressing, Hands on History sessions, and augmented reality tours, there’s always something new happening. Nearby, the Lawrenceburg Public Library also hosts a full calendar of family-friendly events throughout the summer.

Make the Most of Summer Close to Home

Summer in Southeast Indiana doesn’t require a long drive or a packed schedule. It’s about simple, local moments that turn into lasting memories, whether that’s cheering at the track, exploring nature, or finding a new favorite spot along the way.
