The town of California, KY in Campbell County may be just shy of triple digits when it comes to the number of residents (according to the latest census data), but the small southern community still boasts two wineries offering a variety of flavors and experiences.
Does a jalapeno wine bloody mary or wine mojito sound intriguing? Then add a stop at 12 Mile Creek Winery (11093 Flagg Springs Pike, California KY 41007; 859-391-0144) to your back roads winery drive. This family-owned and operated winery overlooks 12 Mile Creek (hence the name!) and is open Friday through Sunday with occasional live music. In addition to trying the more daring concoctions, you can taste traditional wine varietals as well as a refreshing wine slushie or sangria during your visit.
About a 15-minute drive away is Seven Wells Winery (1223 Siry Road, California, KY 41007; 859-816-0003). Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy with your wine tasting, and take a free tour of the winery. The winery sits on land that used to be seven adjacent parcels, each with a house and well on it. The houses are gone, but the wells are still standing (although now covered over), which gives the winery its name, Seven Wells. For non-wine lovers, the venue also offers beer and live music for entertainment. The tasting room is open Friday through Sunday.
Both wineries are part of the Northern Kentucky Back Roads Wine Trail. Pick up a VIP passport at any of the participating wineries, and collect your prize once you’ve traveled the scenic back roads of Kentucky and visited them all!
